New mayor reports threats and assigned detective for protection

By
MILLEDGEVILLE - Newly-elected Milledgeville Mayor Floyd Griffin has been provided part-time security after the middle Georgia city's first black mayor told police he has received death threats.

Police Chief Woodrow Blue said his department is aware of the threats and a detective has been assigned to the new mayor at certain times.

Blue, who did not identify the detective, said it takes very little time from the officer's other duties at the police department.

Blue said, ``We're trying to keep it low-key. We don't want people to realize who he is and be able to pick him out.''

Blue would not say how the threats were delivered to Griffin, saying only that the threats are based on different things that different people have told him and stuff, on the streets, in conversations with him.

Blue said there is no incident report about the threats. He referred all other questions to the mayor, who declined to talk about the nature of the threats.

Griffin said, ``I'm not receiving full-time protection, only on occasions when I feel that I need to have someone with me, such as on evenings when I'm going out to scheduled events. That's no different than a lot of other mayors around Georgia.''

But mayors in Carrollton, Statesboro and Decatur -- all cities of roughly the same population as Milledgeville -- do not have security details. In the much larger cities of Athens-Clarke County, Augusta-Richmond County, Columbus and Albany, the mayors are not provided security.
