Ford restructuring to affect about 125 jobs at suburban Atlanta plant

HAPEVILLE - Ford Motor Company's restructuring plans announced Friday will prompt a work slowdown at its suburban Atlanta plant and affect about 125 workers.

The plant, which makes Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable sedans, has about 2,300 employees and produces about a thousand cars per day. Ford also builds Taurus and Sables at its Chicago plant.

Ford said today it will shed 35,000 employees, including 22,000 in North America, and end production of four vehicle models.

The company and the United Auto Workers are discussing how to implement the slowdown, choosing between a slowdown of the assembly line or a system called ``mass relief'' in which all workers on a shift take lunch and other breaks simultaneously.

A Ford spokesman says the Hapeville plant escaped much of the economic pain because it is recognized as one of the most efficient plants in the world and the Taurus remains one of the top-selling domestic cars.

Ford's unionized assembly workers earn an average of $23.63 cents per hour.
