Citadel beats Georgia Southern to take over first place

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Gregg Jones came off the bench to score 18 points and grab 11 rebounds - all in the second half - to lead The Citadel to a 85-80 victory over Georgia Southern on Monday. <br> <br> Travis Cantrell had 19 for The Citadel (12-3, 4-1 Southern Conference) and Alan Puckett added 15. With the win, The Citadel takes sole possession of the South Division of the conference. <br> <br> Frank Bennett scored 20 points, Sean Peterson 18 and Julius Jenkins 16 to lead Georgia Southern (8-7, 2-3). <br> <br> The teams traded leads of at least seven points in the second half before The Citadel tied the game at 61 on Jones&#39; layup. The Citadel went ahead for good with 6:57 left when Jones hit a free throw. <br> <br> The Citadel increased its lead to 11 at 82-71 with 36 seconds left. <br> <br> Georgia Southern shot 43 percent from the field compared to The Citadel&#39;s 47 percent. The Citadel shot 57 percent (12-for-21) from 3-point range while Georgia Southern managed just 30 percent.
