Citadel beats Georgia Southern to take over first place

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Gregg Jones came off the bench to score 18 points and grab 11 rebounds - all in the second half - to lead The Citadel to a 85-80 victory over Georgia Southern on Monday. <br>

Travis Cantrell had 19 for The Citadel (12-3, 4-1 Southern Conference) and Alan Puckett added 15. With the win, The Citadel takes sole possession of the South Division of the conference. <br>

Frank Bennett scored 20 points, Sean Peterson 18 and Julius Jenkins 16 to lead Georgia Southern (8-7, 2-3). <br>

The teams traded leads of at least seven points in the second half before The Citadel tied the game at 61 on Jones' layup. The Citadel went ahead for good with 6:57 left when Jones hit a free throw. <br>

The Citadel increased its lead to 11 at 82-71 with 36 seconds left. <br>
<br>
Georgia Southern shot 43 percent from the field compared to The Citadel's 47 percent. The Citadel shot 57 percent (12-for-21) from 3-point range while Georgia Southern managed just 30 percent.
