FAA investigating audit on Atlanta airport funds

By
ATLANTA - The Federal Aviation Administration is looking into internal city audits showing that Atlanta officials diverted more than $900,000 in airport funds to other city agencies.

Federal law requires that funds of the city-run Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport be kept separate from the city's general funds.

City auditors uncovered the misspent money in October 2000 and recommended it be returned to the airport accounts, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Monday.

More than a year later, almost $700,000 of the money has not been repaid, accordin to Ben DeCosta, general manager of the airport.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said Tuesday that city officials will share the audit with the federal agency ``and give us an update on the status of the city's returning funds to us.''

Bergen said it is not unusual for airports to conduct their own internal audits and discover expenditures charged incorrectly to the airport. Airports must then take steps to correct the problem, she said.

Airports that do not comply with federal law risk losing federal funding.
