ATLANTA - The Humane Association of Georgia is proposing a pet license plate that would generate money for the care of animals.
The secretary of the group - Carolyn Danese - says the one-time $25 fee for the plate would be used to pay low-cost spay and neutering services and education.
She says the money would help cut down on the thousands of animals being dumped every year at shelters.
The tag has been bottled up in the Legislature's Motor Vehicles Committee for years. Committee Chairman Bobby Parham says he plans to bring the idea to a vote next week.
The bill still would have to pass both the House and Senate if it clears committee. It would have to be signed by the governor and be put to a popular vote on the ballot in November.
The design hasn't been decided. Danese says the association would sponsor a contest and ask children in the state to draw a plate.
