CONYERS - Investigators are trying to determine if a weight-loss chemical might have contributed to the death of former Rockdale County Commission Chairman Randy Poynter.
Dr. Stephen Boyle, the county coroner, said Thursday he ordered a test by the Georgia Bureau of Investiation after a family member informed authorities that Poynter, a former candidate for lieutenant governor, had been taking an over-the-counter weight loss supplement.
Poynter died Sunday at his home. An autopsy was performed, but Boyle said nothing was found to explain the death.
Boyle said the GBI is testing for the presence of ephedrine, a stimulant that is a common ingredient in weight loss supplements. Ephedrine can speed the heart rate and raise blood pressure.
Scientists are investigating adverse health effects associated with ephedrine, but the federal government has held off on possible restrictions pending conclusive evidence.
High levels of ephedrine can lead to cardiac arrest, especially if the patient has a pre-existing heart condition, according to Chris Rosenbloom, chairwoman of the nutrition department at Georgia State University.
Boyle said Poynter had no history of a heart condition.
