GBI tests for weight-loss chemical in Poynter's body

CONYERS - Investigators are trying to determine if a weight-loss chemical might have contributed to the death of former Rockdale County Commission Chairman Randy Poynter. <br> <br> Dr. Stephen Boyle, the county coroner, said Thursday he ordered a test by the Georgia Bureau of Investiation after a family member informed authorities that Poynter, a former candidate for lieutenant governor, had been taking an over-the-counter weight loss supplement. <br> <br> Poynter died Sunday at his home. An autopsy was performed, but Boyle said nothing was found to explain the death. <br> <br> Boyle said the GBI is testing for the presence of ephedrine, a stimulant that is a common ingredient in weight loss supplements. Ephedrine can speed the heart rate and raise blood pressure. <br> <br> Scientists are investigating adverse health effects associated with ephedrine, but the federal government has held off on possible restrictions pending conclusive evidence. <br> <br> High levels of ephedrine can lead to cardiac arrest, especially if the patient has a pre-existing heart condition, according to Chris Rosenbloom, chairwoman of the nutrition department at Georgia State University. <br> <br> Boyle said Poynter had no history of a heart condition.
