Man uses fake bomb to rob Macon bank

By
MACON - Police are looking for a man who claimed to have a bomb on him during a bank robbery.

The Colonial Bank on Pio Nono Avenue was robbed Wednesday by the man and an accomplice, police said. The bomb proved to be fake, however.

Authorities said the suspect walked in the bank at 2:10 p.m., leaned over a counter and opened his jacket. A teller saw what appeared to be a timing device, said Macon police spokesman Sgt. Robert Carr.

The man told the teller he had a bomb, and it was set to go off in 20 minutes, Carr said. The teller gave the man an undisclosed amount of money, and he walked out, leaving the device behind.

The man got into a 1978 blue Lincoln Continental where another man was waiting outside. A witness saw the license tag number and gave it to police.

Bank employees realized the device was not a bomb, Carr said.

An officer, who recognized the description of the car as one he had pulled over before, went to a house on Thomas Street and found the Lincoln there. The men, however, had left in another vehicle.

The man who entered the bank was described as a 6-foot-tall man, slender and about 35-40 years old with a moustache. He wore sunglasses, a baseball cap and a dull gray sweater with a red T-shirt underneath.
