NEW YORK - German electronics and electrical engineering giant Siemens AG has agreed to a multiyear partnership with HealthSouth Corp., a provider of outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging and rehabilitative health care services.
Under the pact, Siemens will be the primary technology provider for the HealthSouth Medical Center, currently under construction in Birmingham, Ala.
HealthSouth, which is based in Birmingham, broke ground on the facility in December.
Siemens said Thursday that every patient in the "all-digital" hospital will wear a Siemens "wellness monitor" that will monitor the patient's health status and immediately notify a clinician if a patient has a problem, showing the patient's exact location.
Siemens also will connect each hospital bed to the Internet, allowing for video conferencing with physicians or family members, and providing security monitoring to ensure confidentiality.
