Cobb County police said the children's father, Brian Stewart Young, 37, of Marietta, ran a red light.
The bus, which was carrying no children, was making a left turn at about 8:20 a.m. when the collision occurred, Cobb County Police spokesman Dana Pierce said.
Pierce said the boy, Brian Young, died at the scene and his sister, Isabella, died about five hours later at WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
Their father also was taken to Kennestone. Hospital officials said Thursday he had been released.
Witnesses told police the driver of the SUV, who was taking the two children to school, failed to stop at a red light.
