'Gooey mess' at Flowery Branch feed mill

By by Ken Stanford
FLOWERY BRANCH - "A gooey mess" is how Hall County Interim Fire Chief David Kimbrell described a 15-ton molasses spill Monday morning at Southern States Feed Mill on the north side of Flowery Branch.

Chief Kimbrell says the job of fire department personnel in a situation like this is to help keep the substance from getting into nearby water ways where even something like molasses could cause a fish kill.

He said there are creeks near the site which feed Wayne's Lake south of Flowery Branch which in turn feeds Lake Lanier. Chief Kimbrell said the state Environmental Protection Division has been notified, per state regulations, because of the size of the spill and the potential impact on the environment.

Kimbrell says the molasses is used in the manufacture of feed such as "sweet feed" for horses. He says it will be up to Southern States personnel to clean up the spill which occurred about 9:00 Monday morning.
