Jane Ayers Evans

March 4, 1923-March 21, 2020

Jane left this world Saturday evening at the age of ’97, living a long and peaceful life.  She was born to Thomas Vincent Ayers and Willie Mae Garrison Ayers in Banks County, Georgia, in a one room cabin overlooking the Hudson River.

      Several months later, the family was able to move into a 2-room cabin on the same family property.  Her Dad left shortly after to find work in Miami, Florida, hoping to send for the family later, but he was killed in the Hurricane of 1926 when Jane was only 3 years old.   She never remembered her Dad but she always longed to see him someday in heaven.   Later the family moved to the Gainesville area where she attended Riverbend School.   She remembered being on the bus the morning of the Tornado of ’36.

     After leaving Riverbend she went to Berry College in Rome, Georgia, majoring in Home Economics. She had to work in the weave shop in order to pay her tuition.  She left school before graduation due to an extreme bout of “home sickness”. Back in Gainesville, she found employment with the Bell Telephone Company where she met and married George Washington Evans.  At this time, she became a homemaker and eventually mother to their four children.  Their children were the love of her life.

She had many interests in life. She was an excellent cook, seamstress, avid reader and listener to AM radio.  Even though she never really left the home much, she heard the world through the radio.  She listened to the likes of Ludlow Porch, Art Bell and Carlton Fredericks, who reinforced her 60-year interest in the study of vitamins and the holistic lifestyle. She faithfully followed her church by radio every Sunday morning.  She loved flowers, gardening, English Home Magazine (which she subscribed her whole family to), Thanksgiving and Christmas. Even at age 96, the little girl in her would come out when it was time to open presents.  After the death of her husband she lived alone for 25 years.  She loved her home and never could imagine being anywhere else. 

 Jane was preceded in death by her Dad, her Mom, a son, Thomas Douglas Evans, her husband, her sister Kathryn and her brother Edward. 

She will forever be remembered and loved by her son Vincent, her daughter Martha (Bob) Slack, her son George (Elizabeth), daughter-in-law Myra and niece Janis Courson. She leaves grandkids, Ben, Andy (Elizabeth), Emily (Chad), Andrew, Thomas and two great-grandchildren, Stella and Caroline.

Most assuredly as you read this, she is attending the great reunion in heaven which she had always dreamed of.
