Alice Sandra “Sandy” Matherly, age 75, of Cumming, GA, passed away Friday, February 21, 2020, surrounded by her children, Margie and David, and sister, Carol, after a long debilitating battle with Crohn’s Disease. She was born in 1944, to the late Robert Paul and Louise Wegener Cummins. Sandy lived and traveled to numerous places throughout her life. She lived in Grove City, PA; Baltimore, MD; Brunswick, NJ; Charleston, IL; Urbana, IL; Phoenix, AZ; Austin, TX; Scottsdale, AZ; and Cumming, GA. For her career, Sandy chose the path of being a nurse practitioner and worked at Carle Hospital, along with Carle Clinic in Mahomet, IL, and a dermatology practice in Phoenix, AZ. Through her years of work, she passed and conquered many milestones such as, becoming one of the first Nurse Practitioners at Carle, and she was the founder of “Nurse on Call’ which was one of the first nursing triage companies. Sandy received a nursing degree from Johns Hopkins, and a master’s degree from the School of Labor and Employment Relations at the University of Illinois. To those who knew Sandy, they could all easily tell you about her amazing sense of humor and her quick wit. She was a skilled bridge player, and organizer of the first Bridge Club at Towne Club in Cumming, GA. She enjoyed golfing, knitting, reading and was highly skilled and experienced playing the game “Are You Smarter Than A Basset Hound.”
Sandy lives on through the lives of her children, Margie DeHaan-Summers and her husband, Mike Summers of Scottsdale, AZ, and David Matherly and his wife, Anne of Parker, CO; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Keith Fitzgerald of Cumming, GA; brother, Skip Cummins of Las Vegas, NV; granddaughters, Olivia, Ava, Zoe, Elsa, Jen, and Lauren; 1 great granddaughter, Aria; along with many other loving relatives and friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
