Dr. John E. Thacher of Gainesville, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, November 10, at the age of 71.
John is survived by his loving wife Michelle, and his beloved daughter Rebecca and son James. He also leaves behind his brother Stephen Thacher, and many cousins, nieces and nephews who he loved very much. He is preceded in death by his parents George and Harriet Thacher, and sister Ellen Thacher Meyer.
John was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin- Madison with degrees in both Zoology and Veterinary Science, he began his career working with pharmaceutical companies, supporting developmental research into animal medications. After working for a number of years, he continued his education, earning a doctorate in Physiology from Clemson University.
John later worked for the hotel industry, where he met Michelle. They married on September 27, 2003, building their lives together and starting a family.
He spent the latter part of his career working for many years at Gwinnett Technical College, where he served as an instructor in the Computer Science Department and later as the Computer Science Program Director. During his time there, he helped build the program and increase enrollment.
After retiring, John focused on quality time with family and caring for his children whom he adored. As a hobby and interest, he spent time researching family genealogy and history, creating documentation for his extended family to treasure. He was an active member in The Mayflower Society; an organization devoted to descendants from the Mayflower. He will be remembered for his warm smile, kindness to others, and sense of humor.
