Fred Henry Overton, Jr.

Obituary Date: Sunday, October 27, 2019

Fred Henry Overton, Jr. was born in Crofton, KY on 11/9/38 to Fred Henry Overton, Sr. and Irene Haskins.  He grew up working in the tobacco fields, fishing and playing basketball.  As a high school senior he broke the all-time individual scoring record for a single game scoring 57 points.  He went to college on a basketball scholarship and later became head basketball coach at Murray State University in Murray, KY being named Ohio Valley Conference’s Co-Coach of the Year for 1976-77.

The following year he moved to Atlanta, GA to take a sales job.  There he met his future wife, Patsy, at the mailbox of their apartment complex.  They were married two years later.  They began attending First Baptist Atlanta together and there, under the teaching of Dr. Charles Stanley, Fred’s life was forever changed.  He surrendered his life to Christ and was never the same again.

God changed Fred from the inside out and put a strong desire in him to study the Bible.  As a result, he ended up putting together several seminar teachings and wrote booklets on various Bible topics such as Heaven, Revelation and Foundational Truths of Scripture.  He presented the teachings in hundreds of churches throughout the Southeast.

As Fred’s body was giving in to cancer in recent years, God raised him up one final time this spring to write a final booklet – Looking Forward to Heaven.  He absolutely could not wait to get there to walk the streets of gold and see Jesus, his loved ones and friends who had gone on before.  His faith became sight early on October 27.

It has been said of Fred that he was one man who was absolutely going to end up in heaven; that is, if he didn’t run past it.  Hopefully he turned around and made it home.

He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Patsy Overton of Cumming, Georgia; son and daughter-in-law, John and Mallory Overton of Atlanta, Georgia; brother, Danny Overton of Madisonville, Kentucky; half-sister, Francis Dockery of Evansville, Indiana; grandson, Arie Overton of Atlanta, Georgia.

The family will receive friends at Memorial Park South on Tuesday, October 29 from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  Mr. Overton will lie in state on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at First Baptist Atlanta Chapel with a service following at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Frank Daws, Bob Schipper, and John Overton will officiate.  Following the service, there will be a graveside service at Memorial Park South at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Grace to You teaching ministry of John MacArthur at www.gty.org/donate
