Leonard Stewart

Obituary Date: Sunday, October 20, 2019

Leonard Stewart, 93, of Gainesville, GA., passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 20, 2019.
He was born March 10, 1926 in Des Moines, Iowa.  He was the second of nine children born to Elmer and Hazel Stewart.  He married his high school sweetheart Vera Mary Dean on October 26, 1947.

After the birth of their three children, they moved from Iowa to Whittier, California, to raise their family.  In 1991, Leonard and Vera moved to Gainesville, Georgia to enjoy their retirement.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great- great- grandfather.

He proudly served in the US NAVAL Service.   He was a quiet man and gifted in many ways to make life a little better for those around him. He was a longtime member of McEver Road United Methodist Church where he was instrumental in many of the church building projects throughout the years.  He loved to tinker with old cars and anything mechanical.  He and his wife delivered Meals on Wheels for many years into their 80’s.

He was preceded in death by his wife Vera, his parents, Elmer and Hazel Stewart; his brothers, Harold Stewart, Elmer Stewart, Joseph Stewart, Alvin Stewart, and sister Shirley Stewart.

Surviving family members include sons and daughter-in-law Ronald and Mary Stewart, Michael and Suanne Stewart; daughter Sandra Collins; grandsons Wes (and Laura) Stewart, Nathaniel (and Lauren) Kay; Jeremiah Kay, Anthony (and Jamie) Massaro, Jeff Massaro; granddaughters Charity (and Mike) Tackett, Carley (and Kevin) Westerberg, Kelly (and Blake) Light, Lisa (and Kai) Bassett; 27 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.

A private graveside service will be held for family only, pallbearers will include Jeremiah Kay, Jeff Massaro, Anthony Massaro, Mike Tackett, Adrian Tackett, Joe Tackett, and Michael Light.  A Celebration of Life Service for friends and family is schedule for 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2019 at McEver Road United Methodist Church located at 3606 McEver Rd., Oakwood, GA. 30566.
