George Kelly Morris

George Kelly Morris 87, of Cumming, Ga passed away on Thursday, October 3rd, 2019.

George is predeceased in death by his sister; Mary Childers, brothers; Billy Morris, and Gene Morris. He is also predeceased in death by his brother in laws; Russell Childers, and Billy Lewis.

George was born in McDonough, Georgia to George and Sarah Morris.

George was a loving and devoted husband. He was intelligent, interesting, generous, and a man of integrity, he loved to travel, read, and garden. He was also a member of The United Methodist Church of John’s Creek, Ga.

George served his country in the United States Navy from 1950-1954.

Dr. Morris graduated from McDonough High School in 1949, he received a Bachelor’s of science from the University of Georgia in 1958 and a Master of science from the University of Georgia in 1962, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Microbiology from the University of Georgia in 1966.

He also went on to retire from the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta as Chief of Enteric Bacteriology Section in 1985. George retired as President and CEO and Chief Scientist at Pathogen Control Associates in 2005.

George served as CDC’s Threat Assessment Team with top security clearance. He also was a special consultant to the World Health Organization and taught courses in developing countries. He was the first to report the isolation of Legionnaires’ Disease Bacterium from environmental sources, and contributed to numerous Scientific journals and publications.

George is survived by his loving wife of 60 years JoAnn Morris of Cumming, Ga.

Children; Gwen Brown (Doug) of Snellville, Ga; Sheila Rutledge (James) of Gainesville, Ga; Jamie Hart of Mt. Vernon, Kentucky; and Robin Caubo (John) of Cumming, Ga.

Siblings; Ben Morris (Dean) of Smyrna, Ga.; Saranell Lewis of McDonough, Ga, sister in laws; Jana Morris of Florida, and Ouida Morris of McDonough, Ga.

Dr. Morris also leaves behind 8 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at McDonald and Son Funeral Home on Sunday, October 6th, 2019 from 2-3pm, and funeral services will be held in the chapel of McDonald and Son Funeral Home at 3pm following the visitation, and interment will follow at the New Hope Methodist Church Cemetery following the service.
