Joan Anne Reid

Joan Anne Reid passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2019.  Joan was a career military officer in the U.S. Army (1973-1992), retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.  Joan was born in Red Bank, New Jersey in 1940 and moved with her family to southern California in 1953.  After graduation from Banning High School in 1958, she served 3 years (1959-1962) on active duty in the U.S. Air Force becoming a specialist in the dental field with the rank of E-4 (at that time titled Airman First Class – A1C).  She also spent 2 years in the Air Force Reserves, while working as a civilian in the dental field as Officer Manager/Senior Oral Surgery Assistant for a group of Oral Surgeons in Riverside, California, and for a period working full time in the Tri-County Dental Society.  She received her B.A. degree in Political Science in 1973 from California State University at Long Beach.  Shortly thereafter, Joan was commissioned a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and served a lengthy career in the Army Military Intelligence Branch focusing on Signal and Electronic Intelligence (SIGINT/ELINT), retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1992.

Joan, the oldest of six children, was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas N. Reid and Grace (nee Quackenbush); her brother, Thomas, Jr.; and sisters, Blanche Kostu, Evelyn Mendoker and Gloria Mezey.  She is survived by her long-time friend and partner of 44 years, Doris Chisler; sisters, Rosemary “Rome” Reid Lester (husband Bob), Joyce Reid, Nancy Reid Nicholls (husband Paul), Terry Reid and Ruth Geardino; and numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.

Private Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel at Memorial Park South Funeral Home.   Interment will follow at Memorial Park South Cemetery with military honors.
