Edwin "Ed. Uncle Eddie' Joseph Healy

Obituary Date: Wednesday, July 10, 2019

Mr. Edwin (Ed. Uncle Eddie) Joseph Healy, age 89, of Flowery Branch, GA passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at The Oaks of Braselton, due to the end stages of Alzheimer’s.

Ed was born August 25, 1929 in Jamaica, Queens, New York to the late Henry Healy and Lillian Cook Healy.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Meta Elizabeth Healy; son, Michael; brothers, Henry Healy and John Healy; and sisters, Mabel Schumm and Edith Cordell.  Ed is survived by his sister, Lillian Hellinger of Brattleboro, Vermont; and 15 nieces & nephews.

Ed served his country proudly as a member of the United States Army, serving during the Korean War conflict.  After his honorable discharge from the Army as a Corporal he moved back to Long Island, where he met his wife to be, Meta, while working at the P.L. Andrews Manufacturing Company.  Once married Ed and Meta moved to Islip Terrace, Long Island.  Ed was then employed at the Northport VA Hospital for 40 years, during that time he was head of the Pest Control Department and then Manager of the hospital laundry facility.  Ed was very active in the community working with Michael, their foster son, and the Boy Scouts troop and on weekends, going hunting with his buddies.  After Ed retired, he and Meta decided to move to Hendersonville, North Carolina.  They loved their community of Hidden Woods, where they made so many wonderful lifelong friends.  During his retirement in Hendersonville, Ed was very active in the local DAV chapter and the American Legion Post 77, as a member of the Honor Guard.  Besides his involvement in the Honor Guard, Ed volunteered at the Charles George Medical Center in Asheville, North Carolina.  He volunteered for 16 years and put in 2,635 hours of services.  He was so proud to help serve our veterans.  After losing the love of his life, Meta, Ed filled his life continuing the service to the veterans and taking care of his home and enjoying the close friendship of his neighbors.  The other thing that kept Ed going was his love of animals, his cats, Randy and Hobo were his best company.  18 years after losing his Meta, living alone got to be very hard for him, so he moved down to Georgia to be near his nephew and god-son, Don Haley and wife Joyce.  He resided at The Oaks at Braselton Senior Community until his passing.

A memorial service will be held at Shuler Funeral Home, 125 Orrs Camp Road, Hendersonville, NC  28792 on Saturday, July 20, 2019.  Visitation with family and friends will begin at 1 p.m. and the memorial service will be at 2 p.m.  Interment will follow at Shepherd Memorial Park, 5045 Asheville Highway, Hendersonville, NC  28791.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the DAV Chapter 14 or Hendersonville Humane Society.
