Donald Benjamin Lockwood

Obituary Date: Thursday, May 30, 2019

Mr. Donald Benjamin Lockwood passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, May 30, 2019.  Mr. Lockwood had survived numerous serious sickness and illnesses over the course of his lifetime including a brain aneurysm, stomach aneurysm, three heart attacks, two strokes, and prostate cancer. 

Funeral Services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, June 3, 2019 in the Chapel of Memorial Park South Funeral Home with interment following at Memorial Park South Cemetery.  Rev. B.H. Bailey and Rev. Derrick Lockwood will officiate.  The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Memorial Park South Funeral Home.

He was born on October 31, 1942 in Clarkesville, Georgia to the late Theodore & Jennie Bell Lockwood.  He was the fifth of eight children born to the union of the marriage.

He joined Days Chapel CME Methodist Church in Clarkesville, Georgia as a young boy.  He served there for a number of years.  He later joined his family, becoming of the Baptist faith & was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Oakwood, Georgia by the late Rev. Coley Wansley.  In his later years, he served & worshipped at Prince of Peace Interdenominational Church, Free Chapel & St. Paul UMC.

He was educated in the Habersham County public school system graduating from Cornelia Regional High School, Class of 1960.  He served in the United States Army from 1961-1967. 

Upon his return home to Clarkesville, Georgia he was reunited with his brother, Theodore (Ted) Lockwood Jr.’s popular Rhythm & Blues Band, Theodore & The Clippers, where he had been their lead guitarist prior to his departure to serve his country.  His most notable moment of his music career was playing lead guitar on Theodore & The Clippers hit single, “You Put Me In The Know” that climbed the hit charts in the late 1960’s.

Mr. Lockwood later graduated from Lanier Technical College earning his degree in Electrical Wiring/Technology.  He became a Journeyman Electrician and was employed by MRC/TRW/SKF USA Inc.  Simultaneously with his full-time employment he was self-employed and worked independently as a concrete finisher, electrician, and handy-man providing numerous services to residents throughout Hall, Gwinnett, Forsyth, Habersham & other surrounding Counties throughout his career.  Due to failing health, he retired from both SKF USA Inc. and his self-employment in 1994.

Mr. Lockwood was a family man joined in holy matrimony to the mother of his daughters, Juanita Lockwood, for 32 years.  He was a very friendly man who never met a stranger.  He possessed an infectious likable personality that drew others to him.  Everyone who knew him loved him.  His daughters were the center of his conversation, as he would tell all that his daughters were “his motivation” as he displayed photos of each of them.  He loved automobiles.  One of his notable hobbies was buying, selling, & trading automobiles.             

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Theodore (Jennie Bell) Lockwood, Sr.; siblings: Mrs. Annie Calloway, Mr. Theodore (Ted) Lockwood, Jr., Mrs. Alberta Russell, Mrs. Lola Putman Holt, and Mrs. Synoria Poole Brock.

He leaves to cherish his memories his four beloved daughters & “sons”-in-law; Mr. & Mrs. Maurice (Deborah) Wise, Sugar Hill, GA, Mr. & Mrs. Patrick (Donna) Sims, Flowery Branch, GA, Mr. & Mrs. Maurice (Monica) Riden, Gainesville, GA, and Mr. & Mrs. Tyrese (Zanita) Hendrix,  Flowery Branch, GA; his beloved grandchildren: Mr. & Mrs. Chris (Paisley) Bishop, Winder, GA, Mr. Johnathan Murray, Gainesville, GA, Mr. Maurice Riden, II., Hoschton, GA, Miss Alexis Carruth, Miss Zoey Hendrix, and Miss Zyla Hendrix, Flowery Branch, GA; One great-grandson, Dominic Murray of Gainesville, GA; his beloved siblings: Mrs. Lynda Davis, Clarkesville, GA & Mr. Barry Lockwood, Miami, FL; The Mother of his Daughters, Ms. Juanita Lockwood, Flowery Branch, GA; a very special brother/friend Mr. John Johnson, Whyteville, VA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
