The Rev. James Garner Vickers, 90, passed away Monday, May 13, 2019 in Baldwin, GA following a period of declining health.
Mr. Vickers was born on April 30, 1929 in Buford, Georgia to the late John Garner and Alma Owen Vickers. He lived in S. Hall County for the majority of his life. He served in the army during the Korean War. He was retired from Lockheed Aircraft. He also owned and operated Vickers Grocery, a staple in S. Hall for many years. He later served as the greeter for J & J Foods in Gainesville for more than a decade. He was an ordained Baptist preacher, serving as pastor of Vickers Memorial Baptist Church. He most recently served as Wednesday night pastor of Christ Ambassadors Church, where he was a member and deacon.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Vickers is preceded in death by his wife of nearly 59 years, Phoebe Bennett Vickers, and sisters, Florine Clark, Tina Tankersley, and Peggy Howard.
Mr. Vickers is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Wanda and Elbert Cochran of Mill Spring, NC, and Joan Maddox of Baldwin, son, Donald “Danno” Vickers of Flowery Branch, grandchildren, Lacey Cochran, James “Jimmy” Cochran, James “Scott” Maddox, Melody Maddox, and Curtis Vickers, and step-granddaughter, Sheila Cochran Autry; step great-grandson Zack Autry.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 17, 2019 in the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home in Gainesville. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Rev. Dan Smith and Rev. Ed Rice will officiate. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, May 16, 2019 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
