Nellie Grace Burdette Peek

Nellie Grace Burdette Peek originally of Fayetteville Georgia, born on April 26, 1927, left this earth to be with her husband and childhood sweetheart, Charles "Oliver" Peek, on April 15, 2019. 

Daughter of Guy Burdette Jr and Eunice Speir, Nellie was raised in a family of 12 siblings.  She graduated from Fayette County high school and married her childhood sweetheart, Oliver as he was called at the time, while he was on a 3 day pass during World War II.   

Family legend holds that lightning struck the chimney of the borrowed home of a relative where they spent their honeymoon before Oliver went away to serve first in the Navy, then the U.S.Army for four years.  

During the war Nellie worked at the Coleman Basket Company in Fairburn while living with her parents. She saved every paycheck, along with all the money Charles (as he was called during and after the war) sent home.   Charles always said he never needed money while in the Philippines because the Army took care of all his needs, so he sent every check un-cashed home to his sweetheart Nell.  

After the war they used the money to move to "the city"; Ben Hill Georgia.  Nellie was a Cub Scout Den mother after the birth of her son David.  After  “Ricky" was born she went to work again, this time at Cluet Peabody as a seamstress making Arrow Shirts.  Later she worked with her husband at Simmons Beautyrest in Atlanta until they both retired..   

Even though “retired” neither of them ever stopped working.  Charles and Nell were well known for fixing and repairing, all manner of broken things, from homes to boats to cars to furniture, and often worked for others totally without pay just because it seemed the right thing to do.  

During their lives Charles and Nell were dedicated to serving and living to glorify God.  

They were members of Ben Hill First Baptist Church in Ben Hill,  Ephesus Baptist Church in Winston, and Pray's Mill Baptist Church in Douglasville.   They were charter members of the King's Way Baptist Church and literally cleared the land and drove the nails to build the first church building there.   

After retirement they continued to attend local Churches as they moved to Tucker then Toccoa Georgia.  Their last Church membership was across the street from their home in Toccoa, Calvary Baptist Church, where they are still remembered by the congregation.

During their lives they gave liberally to support God's work, even though they were never wealthy.   They sacrificially gave to support , Otis Seals, a missionary in El Salvador.    Working with the founding pastor of Kings Way Baptist Church, Garvin Dykes and his wife Faye, they were the first to give toward building the Victory School for the Deaf in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  They helped build the first church for the Deaf in Botswana, they helped purchase bikes for Deaf Pastors in Zambia. they supported the Cornerstone School for the Deaf in the Philippines, they helped purchase horses for Pastors in the Philippines to go into the Mountains to preach the Gospel.  “They have always been there for the School and all the ministries of Joyce's Kids.” Faye said.  

If there was one major theme in the lives of the Peeks it was a never wavering belief in and service to God.   They lived every day with faith that their lives were in the hands of God.  After Mr. Peek's passing, Nell always looked forward to the day she would be with the love of her life again in Heaven.  

That day has come, and it is with rejoicing that we celebrate the passing of Nellie over to the other side to be with Charles Oliver Peek again and with Jesus.

Nell Peek is survived by two children David and Richard Peek.  and their children, Tina, Joshua,  David Allen, and Tristina.  

Nellies sisters and brothers are Lawrence, Clarence, Gladis, May, Roy, Rufus, Otis, Ethel, Una, Matilda and Vera.
