William “Bill” Morrison, age 88, of Mt. Airy, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.
Mr. Morrison was born on July 1, 1930, in Clarkesville, Georgia, to the late J.Y. and Hazel Stewart Morrison. Bill graduated from Clarkesville High School where he helped organize the first football team; he was an outstanding player and was selected to play for the State All Star Team. Bill was later inducted into the Ring of Honor, Habersham County Football Hall of Fame. He attended Piedmont College and left to enter the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict; he earned the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Medal during his service. While stationed at Langley Air Force Base in Virginia, he met his wife, Madelin Hopkins, whom he was married to for 64 years. Bill was a member of Clarkesville Baptist Church for a number of years where he served on several committees. He was a purchasing agent at Clarkesville Mill for 35 loyal and dedicated years. Bill enjoyed bass fishing and deer hunting.
Survivors include his loving wife, Madelin Morrison of Mt. Airy; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Barney Hollabaugh of Toccoa; sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Deborah Morrison of Clarkesville and David and Patricia Morrison of Braselton; brothers, Cecil Morrison and Jimmy Morrison, both of Clarkesville; grandchildren: Will Morrison, Katie Ann Morrison, Jami Esslinger, Joseph Shirley, and Isabella Morrison; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:30 pm on Friday, February 15, 2019, at Clarkesville Baptist Church with Rev. Grady Walden and Rev. David Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with Rev. Tony Goss officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the United States Air Force, Habersham County American Legion Post #84, Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720, and Rabun County DAV Chapter #15.
Mr. Morrison will lie in state at the church from 2:00 pm until the service hour on Friday, February 15, 2019.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 pm on Thursday, February 14, 2019, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, Georgia.
