James Travis Flowers, Jr

Obituary Date: Friday, January 25, 2019

James Travis Flowers, Jr., age 79, passed away on January 25, 2019, at Northside Hospital Forsyth in Cumming, GA. He was born in Montgomery, Alabama and after honorable discharge from the USMC, he attended Albany State College.

Travis retired from the Atlanta Journal Constitution as Southeast Distribution Manager and he and Dolly moved from Albany, GA, in 2004 to be close to family. He was an active member of First Baptist Church Cumming, Salt N Shakers Bible Fellowship Group and Men’s Bible study. He loved fellowship and volunteering his time barbecuing for friends and church functions. Travis held his friendship close and loved all his brothers and sisters in Christ. Some of his earlier and fondest memories were times spent fishing on Lake Seminole with his father-in-law, Leon “Flunk” Goff and his mother-in-law, Ophelia Goff from Pelham, GA.

Travis enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1956 and served his country for 13 years, achieving the rank of Sargent while preforming his duties of Helicopter Door Gunner during the Vietnam War. During his service, SGT. Flowers earned the Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Navy Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, and Good Conduct Medal. His last duty prior to his honorable discharge was Officer Selection Officer in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Mr. Flowers is survived by his wife, Dolly; daughter, Cari (Rudy) Engert; grandsons, Chase and Cason; daughter, Tammy (Joe) O’Conner; grandchildren, Keenan, Clara, and Kevan; sisters, June (John) Holmes, Jeanette (George) Kennedy, and Annette (Earnest) Goodson. He is preceded in death by his father, James Travis Flowers, Sr., mother, Ethylene Flowers White and son Mike Flowers.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Cumming at 1597 Sawnee Drive, Cumming, 30040. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 1:30 p.m. until the hour of service.
