Thomas Virgil Atkinson, age 75, of Cumming, GA, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2019. Virgil lived most of his life near Roanoke Baptist Church, where he accepted The Lord as his Savior as a young man. He had a warm and funny personality, and he never met a stranger. To him, everyone in the family was his “son” or “baby”. One of the highlights of his day was to buy a cold Coke out of the vending machine and enjoy a Little Debbie’s that his cousin Denise would surprise him with. Virgil loved The Gamecocks and was a lifelong fan. He also enjoyed music from the 50’s and 60’s. HE LOVED ELVIS! His cousin Muncie would take him weekly to Captain D’s and he was one of their favorite customers.
Virgil lived out his years peacefully at Chestnut Ridge Nursing Center. He is preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Mazzie Atkinson; aunt and uncle, Clifford and Eleanor (Bo) Bagwell; brothers, Edward Bagwell and Harold Lee Atkinson Jr.
Virgil is survived by his cousins, Debra and Ed Hamrick, Denise and Steven Shoemake, Michael (Muncie) and Tonya Bagwell, Heidi and Junior Pittman, Mary Bagwell; sisters, Hazel Lankford, Betty Sue Corbin and their children and grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Laura and Bill Dominicacli, Glenda and Shawn Elko, Kythea and Tony Samples, Katie and Kevin Nix, Tom Bagwell, Jay and Britney Shoemake, Alexandria Bagwell, Nora Pittman, Maggie Pittman, Josh Pittman, Molly Pittman and many other loving relatives and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at Roanoke Baptist Church on Friday, January 25, 2019 at 1:00 pm. with Rev. Kevin Nix officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, January 24, 2019 from 4 to 9 pm at Ingram Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations toward his funeral may be made to the funeral home in Virgil’s name.
