James N. Sheffield, age 72, of Buford, GA passed away on Friday, December 28, 2018. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Nancy Dragoo Sheffield, Buford, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and James Crouse, Flowery Branch, GA and Amy Sheffield and Robert Green, Buford, GA; grandchildren, Hannah Jernigan and husband James, Matthew Crouse and Patricia Crouse; sister, Stella Hodge, Carrollton, GA; sister-in-law, Donna Simon, Palmyra, NJ; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mr. Sheffield was born December 13, 1946 in Fitzgerald, GA. He was a 1965 graduate of Fitzgerald High School in Fitzgerald, GA. He was a six-year veteran of the U. S. Army having served in the Vietnam War as a scout dog handler. He served in the U. S. Army Green Beret Special Forces and received a National Defense Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and U. N. Gallantry Cross. He was retired from Black Box Company as a fiber optic installer and also did information technology work. Mr. Sheffield was a member of the Saint Mathews Episcopal Church in Fitzgerald, GA. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home. An inurnment service will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA, with military honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Thursday, January 3, 2019 from 11:30 a.m. until time of service at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project or to the Disabled American Veterans in memory of James Nathan Sheffield.
