James David Smith

James David Smith, 62, of Rabun Gap, GA passed away December 23, 2018 with his loving family at his side.

David was born in Carrollton, GA the son of the late Lynn Tolbert Smith and Lottie Doris Dyer Smith.

David attended Villa Rica High School and graduated in 1974. He then attended West Georgia College and graduated with a degree in political science in 1978.  He attended the University of Georgia Law School and earned a Juris Doctorate degree in 1981. He served as a law clerk for Whitfield Forrester before practicing law in Clayton, Georgia.

David volunteered as a coach and board member for the Rabun County Recreation Department.  He also served as a board member for Habitat for Humanity and the American Heart Association.  He was a member of the Clayton Rotary Club for 37 years. 

David was elected and served as a Rabun County School Board member for 16 years. He also served as the judge for Sky Valley and the city of Clayton.

He was appointed by Governor Nathan Deal to the Professional Standards Commission as the School Board representative for the state.  

David enjoyed traveling with his family and fly fishing out west.  He was a supporter  and avid fan both of the Rabun County Wildcats and Georgia Bulldogs.  

David is survived by his loving wife, Susan Stanley Smith of Rabun Gap, GA; two sons, Christopher Whitfield Smith, Andrew Dyer Stanley Smith (Jekka) all of Rabun Gap, GA; two sisters, Dianne Smith and Beverly Lang (Gary) all of Carrollton, GA.  

The family will receive friends Wednesday December 26, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Beck Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM Thursday December 27, 2018 in the chapel of Beck Funeral Home with Rev. Jeremy Noffsinger and Rev. Billy Browning officiating.
