Joan Lee Siler “Sam” Canup, born July 3, 1939 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, died September 26, 2018 in Habersham County, Georgia.
She received her B.A. in English and Speech from University of California at Long Beach and married Dr. C. Neal Canup. As a longtime resident of Anniston, Alabama, she was an actie part of civic life, a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, an outstanding tennis player, and a mainstay of area theatre. She received her Master of Arts in Communication Arts (Theatre) from the University of Montevallo in 1989. After moving to Demorest, Georgia, she became a vital part of area theatre and taught in the Piedmont College Department of Theatre. She was an avid gardener who loved animals, her friends, her students, and especially her family. A true artist in every sense of the word and a brilliant conversationalist, she enriched many lives with her gifts and with her love that shone through it all. Most of all, she will be remembered as a beloved mother and grandmother whose faith and love in her family was immeasurable.
She is survived by her children, Summer Tyree Canup Fox and C. Neal Canup, Jr.; granddaughters, Whitney Siler Fox and Aurelia (Aurie) Tallulah Canup.
In keeping with her wishes, there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be sent to the Habersham County Animal Shelter, 4231 B Toccoa Hwy., Clarkesville, GA 30523.
