John Benjamin Abercrombie

Mr. John Benjamin Abercrombie, age 88, of Dahlonega passed away Monday, November 19, 2018.

Mr. Abercrombie was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on July 12, 1930 to the late Charles G. and Florence Bragg Abercrombie.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Martha Free Abercrombie; brothers Bill Abercrombie, Walter Abercrombie, C.G. Abercrombie, Jr., and Elmer Abercrombie; sisters Lou Nell McDonald, Gurlie Mae Paul, and Margaret Rogers; and son in law Anthony Waters. Mr. Abercrombie served his country honorably in the United States Army. He owned and operated Abercrombie Grocery Store and he drove a school bus for Lumpkin County schools for 14 years and 2 months.  Mr. Abercrombie loved to fish and was affectionately called “Papa Ben” by his grandchildren.  He was proud to have been the longest living member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church that spanned for more than 74 years.

Survivors include his daughters Reba Duff (Clayton), and Susie Waters (Daniel Thomas) both of Dahlonega; grandchildren Benji Smith, Kevin Waters, Colby Duff, Steven Duff, and Sam Duff; 16 great grandchildren including Harley Smith; four great great grandchildren; brothers Tommy Abercrombie (Darlene), Dahlonega, and Garry Abercrombie (Regina), Texas; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 21, 2018 in the chapel of Anderson-Underwood Funeral Home.  The Rev. Les Fuller will officiate.  Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery with military honors.    

The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM Tuesday at the funeral home.
