Mary Steel Landrum, of Discovery Village Independent Living, 1220 Satellite Blvd., Suwanee, Ga., died October 15, 2018, from complications of congestive heart failure. She was 91. She was born on May 17, 1927, in Flint, Michigan, during an extended visit with family there. She lived the rest of her life in the Atlanta area, attending Kirkwood Elementary School, Murphy Junior High School, and Atlanta Girls High, graduating from there in 1945. Talented in music, she played violin in the Atlanta Youth Orchestra, which was the forerunner of today’s Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. She graduated from Mercer University with a degree in sociology and was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. While a student at Mercer, she met her future husband, Jack, a Navy veteran attending college on the G.I. Bill.
Mary Landrum led an active professional life and was well-known as a devoted volunteer and Sunday School teacher in the numerous churches of which she was a member. She taught second grade at Grant Park Elementary School. From 1963 to 1984, she was a teacher at Oak Grove Methodist Kindergarten, and at retirement was director of that kindergarten program. She was a member of Ivy Creek Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Jack Marion Landrum; a son, Robert Mark Landrum; her parents, Elizabeth Ward Steel and Roy A. Steel; brother and sister-in-law, Roy A. Steel and spouse Bernice; and infant grandson, Marshall Landrum.
She is survived by a son, Thomas S. Landrum and wife Susan, Watkinsville Ga.; daughter, Margaret Landrum Harrison and husband Paul, Buford, Ga.; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Landrum, Smyrna, Ga.
Mary Landrum had eight grandchildren: Tempe Landrum Stephen and husband, Chris, Alexandria, Va.; Ginny Landrum Huff and husband Bob, Savannah, Ga.; Michael Landrum and wife Indra, Smyrna, Ga.; Mary Beth Landrum, Smyrna; Amy Harrison Rawls and husband Lewis, Buford; Julie Harrison Richard, and husband Andy; Buford; Petty Officer Scott Harrison, Air Crewman, USN, San Diego, California; and Emily Grace Harrison; Dunwoody. She had ten great grandchildren: Cameron Huff; Jordan Huff; Elexis Landrum; Natalie Landrum; Raj Landrum, Smyrna; Patrick Landrum Stephen; Anna Grace Rawls, Charlie Gatling Rawls; Jackson Andrew Richard, Laney Drew Richard; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are being managed by Flanigan Funeral Home, 4400 South Lee Street, Buford. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday, October 18, 2018 from 6 to 9 p.m. A private family interment will be held at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs on Friday. A Celebration of Life Service will be held for friends and family at 2 p.m. Friday, October 19, 2018 at Ivy Creek Baptist Church, 2500 Ivy Creek Road, Buford with the Rev. Craig Dale presiding. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in her memory to the Ivy Creek Baptist Church Mission Program.
