Edwin A. “Ed” Barfield, Jr., 76, of Gainesville passed away September 12, 2018 following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2018 in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with Rev. Danny Newbern and Rev. Ron Barker officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, September 14, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
Born on March 29, 1942 in Atlanta, he was the son of the late Edwin A. Barfield, Sr. and Louise Abigail Coombs Barfield. Mr. Barfield was awarded a music scholarship to Furman University, attended Florida State College at Jacksonville and Georgia State University in Atlanta. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge Atlanta, a member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple, Atlanta, a Knights Templar Mason, a member of the Yaarab Temple Million Dollar Brass Band, and a member of the Jesters at Yaarab. Mr. Barfield was retired from Gulf Oil Corp. where he was a programmer and supervisor of the IT Division. Mr. Barfield retired from Gulf Oil and went to work at the Hall County Sheriff’s Department where he retired Captain of the Uniform Patrol Division. He was owner and operator of Ed’s Gym in Oakwood, GA. As well as Ed’s Guns and Ammo. Mr. Barfield was a member of Central Baptist Church in Gainesville and Woodland Hills Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA where he was a deacon and chairman of the Deacon Board at Central Baptist Church.
Mr. Barfield is survived by his wife, Nancy Barfield; daughters, Lynn Charles, Christy Barfield-Babushkina and Igor, Lana Barfield Norris and husband, Jeff; grandsons and wives, Jared Charles and Alayna, Ryan Norris and Shelby; grandsons, Drew Norris, Nik Babushkin; great-granddaughter, Madelyn Charles; great-grandson, Colton Charles; sister, Joan Mercer; brother in law, Joe Pinson; sisters in law, Linda Pinson, Edith Pinson and a number of nieces and nephews.
