Mrs. Virginia Sybil Moncrief Tam, 87, passed away on August 25, 2018, at the home of her longtime caregiver, Alana Tollison, in Demorest, GA, after a long and courageous battle from the effects of viral encephalitis.
She was born on October 14, 1930, in Lavonia, GA, the daughter of the late Rev. Calvin and Mary Carver Moncrief. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Timothy Tam, who died in 2011, her brothers, Duel and Tom Moncrief and a sister, Merle Manley.
Mrs. Tam was a woman of great faith. She and her husband were founding members of New Haven Congregational Church where she especially loved singing in the choir and participating in many church activities.
Mrs. Tam was a graduate of the University of Georgia. She taught elementary school for 33 years, primarily at Riverbend Elementary. After retirement, her love of children led her to open her home to provide daycare for young children.
She is survived by her two sons, Richard Jason Tam (Allison) and their son, William Ward of Wilmington, NC, and Andrew Lee Tam (Heather) and their daughters, Ava Marie and Aubree Sybil of Gray, GA.
The family expresses their deepest appreciation to Alana Tollison for her devoted care and friendship over the past 12 years. Alana was like a daughter to Virginia and that was demonstrated through the love and daily care she provided. The family would also like to thank the staff at NEG Medical Hospice Center for their care and support.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 PM on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at Memorial Park Funeral Home immediately followed by the funeral service at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Haven Congregational Church in Gainesville, GA.
