Myrtle Terry Ratzel

Obituary Date: Thursday, August 23, 2018

Myrtle Terry Ratzel, nee Morgan, has passed from this life following a period of declining health. She was 93 years old. Myrtle was born in Hamlet, North Carolina, in 1925. Myrtle was the 8th of 9 children; they all passed away before her.

Myrtle was proud, as we all were, of her accomplishments in life. Myrtle told many stories of being a child of the depression, when times were lean. Following high school, Myrtle went to work for the war effort at Camp Mackall, a substation of Ft Bragg. She had many good memories of her time there. While there, she met her future husband, Carl Robert Ratzel (Bob), who was in the Army.

Myrtle and Bob had the good fortune of being stationed in many wonderful places through Bob's career in the Army. They spent many years in Germany, and also in California, Kentucky and, finally, Georgia, where Bob retired from the military. Myrtle continued her career with civil service at Fort Gordon, Augusta, Georgia. She told many wonderful stories about processing soldiers thru training. Following her retirement, and Bob's second retirement, they moved to New Port Richey, Florida.

Myrtle and Bob enjoyed many activities including bridge, square dancing, and traveling. Following Bob's death in 2001, and a period of living alone, Myrtle moved to Gainesville, Georgia, where she had family. She continued to live independently until her passing.

Myrtle is survived by her son, Stephen (Leah) Ratzel, grandchildren Alison Poole, Michael Beavers, Greg (Marilyn) Ratzel, and great-grandchildren Laine and Erik Ratzel. She will be missed.
