Dr. Charles Hopkins passed away peacefully on Friday, August 17, after 87 years of a life lived well. He loved his God. He was devoted to his loving wife for 65 years. He celebrated his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He craved sharing time and experiences with his friends. He was widely admired for his accomplishments, but he cared most about his relationships.
Charles grew up in Atlanta. He served in the military during the Korean War era. He was educated at Samford, Furman, Emory and UGA, where he received a Doctorate in Education in 1964. His career in education included teaching, leadership, consulting and publishing, efforts that were broadly respected. Ultimately, he was appointed the Dean of one of five Colleges at Georgia State University. As one of the top administrators at a prominent enterprise of higher learning, he led with calm and wise judgment, almost reluctantly accepting authority over others. He was a gentle man, not prone to anger, but decisive and incredibly intelligent in his everyday dealings, as well as his eternal priorities.
His wit was sharp and stung many. He delighted in the friendly banter with others. Words were his tools and he used them like a master craftsman. But in the end, he remembered those that he had touched with the warmth of Christian fellowship and the hope for them to understand the grace of God that defined his life.
There is no need to shed a tear for Charles Hopkins. His reward is secured. He was a man that did justly, loved mercy, and walked humbly with his God. He worshipped for many years at Smoke Rise Baptist Church. There will be a small, private ceremony to celebrate his life. Donations in his name can be made to The Good News Clinic in Gainesville, GA. Notes of condolence can be sent to Marilyn Hopkins at 2601 Thompson Bridge Road, #210, Gainesville, GA 30501.
