Robert Houston “Bob” Bell, age 101 of Mt. Airy, passed away Friday, July 6, 2018.
Born on April 17, 1917 in Habersham County, he was a son of the late John Wesley and Ethel Matilda Blair Bell. Mr. Bell retired as superintendent from the Atlanta Athletic Yacht Club with 27 ½ years of service. He served in the Navy during WW11 in the 13th Special Construction Battalion. Mr. Bell was a member of First Baptist Church of Cornelia, the VFW Post, the American Legion Post and a former member of WoodmenLife Chapter 553. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and bee-keeping in his spare time.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Cantrell Bell and his second wife, Lillie Irene Philyaw Bell; sons, James Houston “Bobby” Bell and Charles Alton Bell; brothers, Crawford Bell, WIlliam Furman Bell (Lila), Angus Lee Bell (Edna), and Charles Edwin Bell (Fannie); sisters, Beulah Bell, Lelia Brown (Joseph), and Dovie Thomas( John).
Mr. Bell is survived by his daughter, Johnnie Bell Phillips of Mt. Airy; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 14 great-great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are 2 pm on Thursday, July 12, 2018 in the Chapel of McGahee Griffin and Stewart with Rev. Donald Grizzle, Rev. Larry Ryals, and Rev. Mickey Umbehant officiating. Interment will follow in Yonah Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the United States Navy, Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720, American Legion Post #84, and the DAV Chapter #15.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.
