Charles Luther Spillers passed away on Tuesday, June 19, 2018 at his home in Cumming, Georgia. He was born in Butler, Georgia on September 5, 1952 and was the oldest of three children of James Luther Spillers and Virginia Joyce Bickley Spillers. Charles was extremely proud of his humble roots in Taylor County.
He graduated from Taylor County High School in 1969, where he was a sensational baseball player and all-around athlete. He attended Georgia Southwestern College and earned his Bachelor of Science in 1976. He received his Juris Doctor from Woodrow Wilson College of Law in 1984. Charles was a member of the State Bar of Georgia for the past 36 years. He initially represented employers and insurance companies, but decided that his passion was to help injured parties in workers’ compensation and personal injury cases. He served on the Workers’ Compensation Claimant’s Lawyers Board of Directions and was a member of the Georgia Trial Lawyers Association and Forsyth County Bar Association.
In all of his roles – son, brother, husband, father, step-father, friend, colleague, coach, and mentor – he exemplified the values of love, support, guidance, integrity, honesty, and humilty. He adored his family more than anything and was an incredible example for everyone. As an attorney, he was admired by all and one of the most distinguished in the profession. His superior knowledge and zealous representation never stopped him from being respectful to his peers and clients. Outside of being with his family, one of his greatest passions was baseball, whether it was coaching in his youth travel league or cheering his Braves to another win. In recent years, he enjoyed the peacefulness and challenge of a mountain bike ride. Simply put, Charles was one of the most amazing men God created and we are thankful to have spent our lives with him.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Virginia Joyce Bickley Spillers, his father, James Luther Spillers, and his daughter, Amy Spillers.
Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Janis Horning Spillers; his sons, Jameson Forrest Spillers and Jackson Cole Spillers; his step-daughter, Sydney Shae LaBorde; his siblings, Deborah Spillers Robinson and Burt Spillers; and numerous nieces and nephews that he adored, as well.
A celebration of Charles’s life will begin at 9-11A.M. on Sunday, June 24, 2018, at McDonald & Son Funeral Home in Cumming immediately followed by a service in the Chapel, which will be led by his and his wife’s close friend who also performed their marriage, Doug Rohan. He will be buried at Sawnee View Memorial Gardens.
Pallbears include, Robert Bourne, Jason Craig, Roger Blaha, Chris Cole, Darl Champion, Chris Jenkins, Mitch Shook, Nick Benzine, Matthew Robinson, and Jake Spillers. Honorary pallbearer is Joseph Zeitouni.
Memorial donations may be made in his honor to Kids’ Chance of Georgia as Charles loved all children and his workers’ compensation clients. He would be proud to know that he helped an injured workers’ child further their education.
