Mr. Larry Joe Whiten, age 72 of Oak Creek Circle, Toccoa passed away Monday, June 18, 2018 at the Stephens County Hospital.
A son of the late Joe Holmes Whiten and Leona Carroll Whiten, he was born January 8, 1946 in Stephens County, Georgia. He was a 1963 graduate of Toccoa High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Landscape Architecture and Design in 1968 from the University of Georgia. He continued graduate work at Georgia Tech. He began his career at the Georgia Mountain Planning Commission before opening his landscape business in Gainesville, Georgia. In 1979, he returned to Toccoa and was the owner of Whiten Golf Carts. After retirement, he re-opened his father’s beloved Whiten Shoe Shop.
Larry was an avid Georgia Bulldog Fan and a Bulldog Club Member for over 40 years. He enjoyed spending time with his family and tailgating with friends. He loved watching his six grandsons grow and develop into fine young men. Some of his favorite memories including spending time at the mountain home in Sky Valley.
Survivors include his loving wife, Michele Guthrie Whiten of 37 years and his daughter, Morgan Whiten of the home; his children, Paige Whiten Lally (Dan) of Suwanee, Parker Whiten (Susan) of Toccoa; grandchildren, Spencer and Sam Lally, Knox and Charlie Whiten, Rylee and Ramsey Fulbright; brother, Wallace Whiten (Kayren); sister, Connie Whiten Pearson (Jim).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Margaret “Meg” Whiten Fulbright.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 23, 2018, 2 O’clock p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with The Reverend Dr. John Brown and Mr. Mike Holcomb officiating. The family will receive friends in the McNeely Hall following the service. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Flowers are optional and those who wish can give memorials to the First United Methodist Church, 333 East Tuaglo Street, Toccoa, Ga. 30577 in memory of Mr. Larry Joe Whiten.
Interment will follow in the Toccoa City Cemetery with the Acree-Davis Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Larry Joe Whiten.
