Hammond Smith, 91 of Gainesville passed away Monday June 4, 2018 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.
Mr. Smith was born in the Gainesville Mill Village to Boyd Hoyt Smith and Aldine Hulsey Smith. He attended Lyman Hall High School and served in the United States Army during World War II in the 153rd Engineering Construction Battalion and the 3013th Maintenance Engineers in occupied Japan.
Mr. Smith was a longtime employee of the Georgia Department of Transportation and at the time of his retirement in 1978 was serving as State Utilities Engineer. He was a life member and Past Commander of the Paul E. Bolding Post 7 of the American Legion and was very involved with American Legion Baseball, having served as State Chairman. Mr. Smith was a member of Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Smith; daughter and son-in-law, Terri and Larry Johnston; son, Kevin Smith; grandchildren, Wally Smith and Katie Dunn, Clay and Lyndsey Smith, Mary Beth, Christopher and Parker Smith; three great grandchildren, Meredith and Jude Rogers and Pearl Smith; sister, Rebecca Ingram; sister-in-law, Andrea Smith and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and his devoted caregivers.
Mr. Smith is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Harold Smith and Rod Smith.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday June 7, 2018 in the chapel of Little & Davenport Funeral Home. Rev. Boone Strickland and Rev. Dee Dillin will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date in the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday June 6 from 6-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
