Fern McCurry Lavinder, age 89 of St. Simons Island, GA, passed away Thursday, May 31, 2018 after a battle with Alzheimer’s. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 4, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM at the funeral home. A second funeral service will be held on Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church in St. Simons Island, GA. Interment will follow at The Christ Church on St. Simons Island. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) in memory of Fern. Fern was born August 17, 1928 to the late Hattie and Conway McCurry in Erwin, TN. She had 4 siblings; Ruth, Dena, Brown and Faye. Fern fell in love and married Jack Lavinder on December 25, 1951. They were married for 66 years. She will forever be remembered by her loving husband Jack; her 2 children, Jeffrey Scott Lavinder and his wife Lisa and Jamie Beth Lavinder Brown and her husband Richard; 2 grandchildren, Lauren and Lisa; 2 bonus grandchildren and 5 bonus great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends. Fern was a strong Christian lady who loved Jesus and lived her life after the example of Christ. She attended the University of Tennessee, married and moved to Atlanta where she worked for the CDC and later retired with her husband to St. Simons Island. There she did volunteer work for the Arthur J. Moore Methodist Museum where she received the Arthur J.
