Maurice Lipham Williams, 85, passed away peacefully at her residence at Cameron Hall Assisted Living in Canton. She was born May 31, 1932 in Cleburne County, Alabama, the daughter of the late George Themon Lipham and Carrie (Hanson) Lipham and was the third child in a family of five.
Maurice grew up on a farm in Ranburne, Alabama, and attended Ranburne High School where she excelled in academics and home economics, winning may awards for her skill as a seamstress. This was also where she met the love of her life, Herman Joyce Williams, whom she married in 1953.
After the birth of their children, the couple moved to Atlanta and then to Tucker, GA, where they became active members of their church and community. In addition, Maurice worked for many years in the China Department of Rich's/Macy's at North Dekalb Mall. Retirement took them to a new home in Cumming, where they found new ways to serve at the First Baptist Church and made many new friends.
A shining example of a joyful Christian life, Maurice was known to all as a consummate mother and homemaker. She was an excellent cook who always enjoyed preparing meals for family and friends. In addition, she continued to use her sewing skills to create many beautiful projects for others. Her kindness, sweet spirit, and intelligence endeared her to everyone she met.
Maurice was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Steven George Williams, and grandson, Christopher Paul Whorton. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Herman Williams; daughter, Lisa Williams Whorton (Tim); daughter-in-law, Vicki Smith Williams; and grandchildren, Andrew Marcus Whorton (Chelsea), Timothy Blake Whorton, Patricia Marie Williams, and Cary Jefferson Williams; sisters, Annette Fincher and Vernette Smith (Don); and many loving nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 23, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Cumming, 1597 Sawnee Drive, Cumming, GA 30040. Interment will follow at Sawnee View Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church the hour prior to the service.
