Mary Helen Roop Hosch, 103, of Gainesville, Georgia, died on May 15, 2018, at her home in Lanier Village Estates of Gainesville. She was the widow of Hugh W. Hosch, Sr., of Gainesville. She was preceded in death by her son Charles Roop Hosch and is survived by family members including son Hugh, Jr., and his wife Estelle, of Atlanta, grandchildren Brannon, Jason, Trevor and Robbie Hosch; great-grandchildren Meghan, Maylee and Kai Hosch; Charles Hosch’s widow Patty, of Marietta; cousin Kit Dunlap of Gainesville and her brother Bud Long of Jasper, Alabama, and Kit’s children Whitney and Jamie Dunlap (Jennifer) and grandchildren Samuel and Carol Kate Dunlap.
Mary Helen Roop was born in Carrollton, Georgia. The only child of Superior Court Judge Charles E. Roop and Lula Long Roop. She attended Carrollton High School and was an honor graduate of Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Through the years she was an active member and supporter of the First United Methodist Church of Gainesville, as well as an ardent benefactor of Brenau, being a generous contributor to various Brenau projects and a member of the Brenau Board of Trustees. She was also an accomplished bridge player and pianist, excelling in bridge tournaments and performing in piano functions. She was a longtime member of the Gateway Garden Club of Gainesville, the Junior Service League, the Northeast Georgia Medical Center Auxiliary, and other organizations. Mary Helen Hosch traveled the world. Most of all, she was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend who will be so dearly missed.
Services by Little and Davenport of Gainesville. Memorial gifts may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Gainesville, Brenau University, and Lanier Village Estates Samaritan Fund. A special Memorial Service for Mary Helen’s family and friends will be held at the Gainesville First United Methodist Church Chapel on Monday June 11, 2018 at 11:00 a.m.
