Hubert Shuratt Whitworth

Mr. Hubert Shuratt Whitworth, age 83, of Whitworth Road in Lavonia, Georgia passed away Friday, April 20, 2018 at the residence.

A son of the late Hugh W. and Ether Mae Whitlow Whitworth, he was born October 18, 1934 in Franklin County, Georgia where he lived all his life. He attended Darlington High School in Rome, Georgia, attended Cornell University and graduated from the University of Georgia where he was a Kappa Sig Fraternity Member. He was in the poultry business with his family for many years which grew into a modern hatchery, feed mill, processing plant and distribution network. In 1968, he established Franklin Insurance Agency and now has eight offices throughout Northeast Georgia. In 1968, he and his father purchased the controlling interest in Northeast Georgia Bank and they have grown to include twelve other locations in Northeast Georgia. He served as Vice-Chairman and Chairman for 50 years.

He served on the Franklin County Board of Education in the early 60’s. He served for 20 years on the Tri-County Development Authority. He was a member of the Georgia Bankers Association, a former member of the Lavonia Lions Club and the Kiwanis Club. He served on the District Finance Committee for the Northeast Georgia Boy Scout Council. He was a member of the First Baptist Church Lavonia, a Deacon and served on the finance committee.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years , Rachel McConnell Whitworth; two daughters and son-in-law, Wendy C. Whitworth of Lilburn, Georgia and Leigh and Tom Kelly of Monroe, Georgia; two sons and daughter-in-law, Barry and Laura Whitworth of Toccoa and Randy S. Whitworth of Lavonia; grandchildren, Franklin and Elizabeth Whitworth, Christopher Whitworth, Wesley Kelly, Matthew Kelly, Caroline Kelly, Steven Whitworth and Sarah Whitworth; two great-grandchildren, Charlotte and Victoria Whitworth; sister, Patsy Gilbert of Greenville, South Carolina, sister-in-law, Pat Hancock of Comer, Georgia; a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 25, 2018, 4 O’clock p.m. at the First Baptist Church Lavonia with The Reverend Dr. Larry Finger and Mr. Don Whitlow officiating. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers, Franklin Whitworth, Christopher Whitworth, Matthew Kelly, Wesley Kelly, Steven Whitworth, David Hancock, Scott Hancock and Jeff Hancock.

Interment will follow in the Lavonia City Cemetery with the Acree-Davis Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Hubert Shuratt Whitworth.
