Marilyn Woodberry Brown McCarver passed away April 9, 2018 at the age of 91 after a wonderful life.
Born in Washington DC, a self described army brat, to the late Brigadier General and Mrs. John Henry Woodberry and predeceased by her sister Marguerite Woodberry Gadberry.
She traveled the country extensively with her family as dictated by the army. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from the College of William and Mary. In 1948 she met and married Dr Pierpont Flanders Brown, Jr in San Antonio and they settled into his hometown of Gainesville. Here she raised her family: Catherine Brown Hartley, Cleveland Woodberry Brown (Rhonda), Dr. Pierpont Flanders Brown, III (Clarissa), and Marguerite Flint Brown. After Pep’s death she was married to Dr. William Cullen McCarver, Jr. for 28 years until his death in 2005. Stepchildren Mary Lynn McCarver Coyle (John) and Warren Cullen McCarver. Her sister-in-law was Frances Logan Brown. She had ten grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
She loved traveling and the arts. Majoring in Fine Arts in college, she continued her passion acting in several plays with the Gainesville Community Theatre, singing with the Gainesville Chorale and the Northeast GA Oratorio Society. For many years, as an accomplished pianist she performed in concerts and recitals and regularly in the Follies at Lanier Village, where she always gave a rousing rendition of “Let Me Entertain You”. She sang in the National Cathedral in Washington and in Carnegie Hall. As a life long Episcopalian she was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church choir for over 50 years and was a regular reader and chalice bearer.
She was very active in the community as President of the Junior Service League, Gainesville Music Club, Lanier Study Club, Progressive arts Club, Blue Chip Club and the Hall County Medical Auxiliary. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mensa Society
The celebration of her life will be held at Grace Episcopal Church Saturday, April 14 at 2 pm. In addition to your favorite charity, memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church Friends of Music or the Leukemia Research Foundation. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
