Charles (Chas) Barton Cosgrove

Obituary Date: Sunday, March 25, 2018

Charles (Chas) Barton Cosgrove III, age 38, born August 21, 1979 in New Haven, CT, and resident of Gainesville, GA since 2008 passed away peacefully with his family by his side at Emory Hospital on Sunday, March 25, 2018.  Charles grew up in Southington, CT and Hilton Head Island, SC attending parochial elementary school and public middle and high schools.  He graduated from Hilton Head High School in 1998 and in 2001 earned his Associates Degree in Culinary Arts from Savannah Technical College in Savannah, GA.  Charles was a gifted chef who thoroughly enjoyed cooking for people.  Throughout the years, he applied his culinary expertise and formal education in a variety of settings within the food services industry aspiring to one day own his own catering business.  Charles was devoted and determined to doing the best job possible, guiding and supporting others along the way.

He embodied an intrinsic altruistic and generous nature so pure and rare that he gave anything and everything he possibly could to others without ever complaining or expecting anything in return, even sometimes to the detriment of his own needs.  He was so selfless and chivalrous he would give you the shirt off his back in the middle of winter without having a spare for himself.  His attribute of unconditional love extended to all animals as well as he even once dove into a dumpster to rescue a litter of abandoned puppies riddled with fleas.

Anyone who knew Charles can attest to how respectful and courteous he treated everyone with whom he came in contact.  Even throughout the most debilitating and excruciatingly painful advanced stages of his courageous battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, he never wavered from saying please and thank you.
Charles lived a content and modest lifestyle, never concerned with materialism or the superficial aspects of life.  He always expressed genuine appreciation and gratitude for anything he did receive, even the little things.

His unique character is truly inspirational.  The carefree bounce in his step, his quirky slapstick sense of humor and charming, infectious grin will be greatly missed, but always remembered and cherished in our memories.

Charles’s father and namesake, Charles B. Cosgrove Jr., both lifetime members of the NRA, will always cherish those sunny afternoons they spent together shooting trap and skeet.  His mother, Maryellen, will forever treasure in her heart the meals she and her beloved son planned and prepared together for gatherings of all sizes.  His older sister, Jennifer, and younger brother, Mark, will never forget the laughter and adventures and fun-loving mischief the three siblings shared together.

A gentle soul with a pure heart of gold, Charles personified the character of an angel while here with us on earth and is now our guardian angel in heaven continuing his legacy of altruism by watching over and protecting us.  We are so grateful and blessed for the precious time we had the privilege of sharing with him and know we will be reunited in heaven.  Until then, we will honor his memory by striving to emulate his benevolent character.

Charles is survived by his loving parents, Charles and Maryellen Cosgrove of Gainesville, GA; sister Jennifer, brother-in-law Brendan, and nieces Brinn and Tierney McKenney of York, ME; brother Mark, sister-in-law Amy (Elrod), and nephew David Dalton Cosgrove of Gainesville, GA; maternal aunt and uncle Susan and Ric Wilson of Gainesville, GA; cousins Kate Panasci and Eric Wilson; and many other beloved extended family members and friends.

Chas, we miss you dearly and will always love you from the bottom of our hearts.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at St. Michael Catholic Church. The family will receive friends at the Memorial Park Funeral Home on Monday, April 2, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the University of North Georgia Scholarship Fund in memory of Charles B. Cosgrove III are greatly appreciated.
