Judith Ann Thompson

Obituary Date: Monday, March 26, 2018

Judith Ann Thompson, 77, of Buford, GA, passed away valiantly battling cancer at Gwinnett Medical Center on Monday, March 26, 2018. She was born in St. Joseph, MO, to parents Theodore and Catherine on September 30, 1940. Her siblings Bill, Nancy, and Mary carry fond memories of Judy’s daring (albeit rebellious) childhood spirit, which persisted into her final hours.

After nearly 30 years of loyal service, Judy retired from AT&T on June 1, 2001. She began her career as a clerk and was promoted through the Bell system, becoming a rare “Frame Dame” (the name for woman line installers), an office and home installer, and finally, a systems technician. Ironically, she was always reachable on her cell phone.

Judy, a practicing Catholic, married love David C. Thompson on February 14, 1978. They lived happily near Lake Lanier, where they entertained family and friends at their home and pool for more than two decades. David preceded Judy in death on September 19, 2006. She will join her husband in burial at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.

Surviving family members include her four children and their spouses, Judy Collins and Shane Murphy, Jim and Sally Mengwasser, Jeff and Amanda Mengwasser, John Mengwasser, and Donna Eggleston and James Keever, as well as grandchildren, Ashley and Jim Mengwasser, and Cody and Kylee Sargent. Judy was an avid adventurer and lover of life. The impressive feats notched in her belt include two skydives (one televised on GPB), eight cruises, spelunking, white water canoeing, rollercoaster riding, and countless other thrill-seeking endeavors. Those who knew her well will remember her as a flowing source of light, laughter, and love. Her roles as mother, grandmother, helper, animal rescuer, sage, and spiritual advisor extended far beyond her immediate circle. Because she adored and appreciated every heart she encountered, she was immediately and permanently embraced by all.

A viewing is scheduled for Tuesday, April 3 from 5-8 p.m. at Flanigan Funeral Home in Buford. The memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4 with Deacon Don Nadeau officiating. Family, friends, fans, and former associates are invited to both gatherings to celebrate Judy’s incomparable legacy. Interment will follow at GA National Cemetery in Canton, GA.

In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorial donations to the Cancer Research Foundation honoring Judith A. Thompson.
