Gwenda Marie (Gwen) Brent

Mrs. Gwenda Marie (Gwen) Brent, age 80 of Pendergrass, GA, passed away at her home surrounded by family and special friends on Thursday, February 22, 2018.  She was born on May 8, 1937 in Blount County, AL to Eldridge Lawrence, Sr. and Eva Lee Ina (Fulenwider) Brothers.  Gwen graduated from Jefferson High School and attended Marsh Business College in Atlanta, GA.   

She helped break the barriers for women in the business world and assisted with the mass marketing of insurance to employees of major fortune 500 companies.  She enjoyed 45 years in the insurance industry with both companies and brokers.  She was the first woman president of Marine Underwriter’s Association, Southern Loss Association and fourth woman President of Alta Claims Association, where she continued her membership until her death. She loved her work and retired to care for her husband Spencer.

Gwen loved others well.  There was always food in the oven or care packages made for her family and neighbors.  Her specialties included cheese and home-made biscuits, mac n cheese and banana nut muffins. She was always there if anyone needed a helping hand.  She and her late husband would secretly give to fellow employees and friends in need.  Whether it was money for utilities, boxes of groceries, or children’s gifts at Christmas, she always showed love and kindness to others. 

She also had a passion for gardening.  She loved the earth and caring for her plants.  Beautiful roses and peonies adorned her yard.  She always planted more than she needed in her vegetable gardens, and the fruits of her labor were always shared with those around her.  Her hands and arms were big, but her heart was always bigger.  Her joy came in helping others.

Gwen was preceded in death by her loving husband Spencer Brent, her parents, Eldridge and Eva Lee Brothers, brother, Neil Brothers and her beloved cat, BJ.   She is survived by her brothers, Lynn and Betty Brothers, Gainesville, GA, and Eldridge and Delores Brothers, Jr., Maysville, GA, special friends and adopted family Donald and Nancy Roberts, Pendergrass, GA, and a number of nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services are scheduled for Sunday, February 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Reverend Mark Spence will officiate.  The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 24, 2018 from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
