Ellen Whitworth Alexander

Ellen Whitworth Alexander, age 83, of Lawrenceville, GA passed away on Monday, February 5, 2018. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years, Hugh Eugene Alexander; parents, Clarence and Effie Whitworth; and brother, Marvin Whitworth. Mrs. Alexander is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Tim Short, Cumming, GA, Gwen and Daryl Kilian, Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Alex Short, David Short, and Hannah Kilian; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dean and Peggy Whitworth, Toccoa, GA, Joe and Joann Whitworth, Toccoa, GA, Johnny and Vickie Whitworth, Toccoa, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Sam Bennett, Clarkesville, TN. Mrs. Alexander was born January 2, 1935 in Toccoa, GA. She was a 1952 graduate of Stephens County High School in Toccoa, and a graduate of Piedmont College where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She began teaching school at Harmony Elementary School, Suwanee Elementary School, and then Sugar Hill Elementary School, where she retired with over thirty years of service. She was also “Teacher of the Year” at Sugar Hill and received several other awards during her career. Mrs. Alexander was a member of Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, GA, and a member of Gwinnett County Teachers Association. She and her husband, Hugh Alexander owned Alexander Furniture Store in Toccoa, GA for twenty-five years. “She will be remembered by her family as a wonderful mother, grandmother and a loyal friend to many people.” Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 12:00 noon in the Chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home with Rev. Greg Nix officiating. Family and friends will meet at 2:30 p.m. graveside at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, 8503 Pea Ridge Road, Cornelia, GA 30531. The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral Home.
