James Penhorwood Campbell died peacefully Wednesday at his Cumming home surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Indianapolis, IN on November 27, 1928 the son of Elsie Smith Campbell and Thomas Ernest Campbell, Jim was a member of America’s Greatest Generation.  At age 17, Jim enlisted in the army and was stationed in Korea.  He returned home to attend Georgetown University on the GI Bill and afterward received his commission as an officer.  He returned to Korea a second time as a member of the 65th Infantry.  After his discharge he began a 30-year career with Sears, Roebuck and Co.  He and Pat bought a Maytag franchise and the entire Campbell family worked together making it a success.  Jim and Pat retired to a home on the Half Moon River in Sunbury, GA where they spent blissful retirement years with their children and grandchildren on the rivers and ocean.  Jim was an avid fisherman, shrimper and scuba diver.  His exploits on the river were legendary.  After he moved to Cumming to be closer to his daughters, Jim was blessed to meet his wife Sandy.  Sandy was his dancing partner, his hiking buddy and his best friend for the last five years.

Jim will be missed by Sadie, the sweet Pitbull who wandered into their lives a year ago and by his 14-year-old cat, Sassy. Jim is predeceased by his parents, his sister Mary Elizabeth Greene, and his wife of 52 years, Pauline Winderweedle Campbell.  He is survived by his wife Sandra Esterle Campbell, his daughters Winde Sullivan (Hank), Jennie Swany (Gregg), Carenjames Campbell (John Holman), sister Melissa Mitchell, his 3 granddaughters, great grandchildren, loving nieces and nephews and extended family.

Service with military honors will be held at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 2:30PM.  Transport and procession for those who would like to take part will leave McDonald and Son funeral Home in Cumming at 1:00 PM.
