J.D. Whelchel

Mr. J.D. Whelchel, age 85, of Dahlonega passed away Tuesday, January 30, 2018.

Mr. Whelchel was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. He was born on March 31, 1932 to the late Adolphus and Flora Alston Whelchel. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters Ruby Anderson and Eula Mae Whelchel.  Mr. Whelchel served his country honorably as a United States Marine during the Korean War.  He was retired after 54 years of faithful work at Burlington Industries formally known as Pine Tree.  He was a member of New Gainesville Seventh Day Adventist Church. 

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Florence Whelchel, Dahlonega; sons and daughters in law Sam and Andrea Whelchel, Alta Loma, CA and Michael and Terrian Whelchel, Pensacola, FL; and 5 grandchildren.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 PM Sunday, February 4, 2018 at New Gainesville Seventh Day Adventist Church. Interment will follow in Dahlonega Memorial Park with military honors. The family will receive friends from 4-8 PM Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Banister Funeral Home.
